Khmer women hand-weave premium 100% cotton fibres on their looms, creating the Makara scarf. Incredibly unique and comfortable, it’s an instant essential for your adventures. Each piece is meticulously handcrafted with care, developing its own soul and design, steeped in the beauty of Cambodia’s countryside. Evoke style while travelling or walking into town, as this classic scarf will always fit the local scenery.
Wearing your Makara scarf shows you care about a sustainable world. It’s truly handcrafted, since no electrical machinery is required in its production.
Makara is a common Cambodian first name meaning “born in January”. The Khmer women handcrafted the first scarf for us in Cambodia in January – the same month we launched our website – we honour this collaboration by naming the Makara scarf.
Skillful weavers follow the same pattern and source high-quality premium cotton, yet each Makara-Scarf may vary slightly in dimensions and natural marks contributing to its genuine essence. Machine washable in cold water on a regular cycle, for your convenience.
As unique as your travels, each piece of MERSiŌ gear has a story and a soul of its own. Collaborating with artisans who share our world, we choose supplying partners based on their skills, values and dedication to crafting high-quality products in sustainable working conditions.
With this Makara scarf you support the sustainable development of a rural community of Cambodia, since we are collaborating with a cooperative making sure Khmer women receive a fair wage for their work and are working in good and safe conditions. They also support those in the community who are landmine wounded and HIV infected, helping them to work and be able generate revenue sufficient to support their families.
